Hello! I'm Bodie Dykstra, the owner and operator of BD Editing. I believe that the self-publishing revolution has forever changed the way that authors connect with their readers, and my mission is to help independent authors succeed in an increasingly competitive market by producing top-quality books. It is my belief that the best independently published books can and should be indistinguishable from their traditionally published counterparts. My services thus aim to provide a level of quality that meets or exceeds that which is provided by traditional publishing houses.
I graduated from the University of Calgary with a Master of Arts degree in history in 2014. If you're interested, my research focused on British military tactics during the early stages of the First World War. In 2020, I published a paper on the subject in The Journal of Military History.
After completing my master's degree, I worked as a writing tutor/instructor at the University of Calgary's Student Success Center while completing a Professional Writing Certificate, a program that included a formal course in copyediting.
I began what would become BD Editing in the fall of 2015. After moving to Vancouver, British Columbia, in May 2016, I first learned about the self-publishing revolution and found some wonderful online communities (notably /r/selfpublish). Quickly thereafter, I took BD Editing full-time. Since then, I have worked with dozens of authors and hundreds of books, and I absolutely love what I do for a living.
A Bit More About Me
As you might have gathered, I'm a big-time history buff. I love history in all its forms, but there's a special place in my heart for military history. I'm also fascinated by the latter stages of the Roman Empire, when those mean barbarian peoples like the Goths, Vandals, and Huns were storming Italy, Gaul, and Hispania.
Aside from history, my other great interest is space. To my wife's horror, I can name dozens of exoplanets and have taught myself the math behind the rocket equation.
I'm also an avid reader. My favorite genre is military science fiction (big surprise, right?), and my all-time favorite book is The Forever War by Joel Haldeman. Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers is right up there, too. My more modern favorites include The Expanse series and Marko Kloos's Frontlines series (which was originally self-published).
What I Edit
I prefer to work with fiction, though I will consider nonfiction projects if I'm at least somewhat comfortable with the subject matter. (If you've written a history book, I'm your guy.) My portfolio is full of science fiction, litRPG, and fantasy, but I also enjoy working with YA and romance. I do not accept projects that include harem elements (I will consider reverse harems) or any sort of male wish-fulfillment fantasy.
I've recently updated my website, and in the process, I accidentally deleted all my testimonials. I'm currently gathering new ones, so stay tuned! If you'd like references, please feel free to contact me, and I'll put you in touch with some past or current clients.
